I wish all our days were like this (minus the fever Eva was running). Skipped town, drank our weight in coffee, build sand castles, and took naps on the beach.

Back in the real world, we've been busy busy busy, hence me being MIA over here.

A few things I am loving right now:

Some lovely friends of ours came over last weekend and did a little shoot with us. They are a cute husband&wife photography team and were so pleasant to hangout with (too bad they live far away in Fresno). They do amazing work! You can check out more (better ;) pictures from our shoot on their site idrop photo and many of their others... Highly recommend using them if you are in Sacramento/Central Valley area (as they like to travel).

p.s. it's crazy how fast the kiddos grow (and how much we change)! compare to another fun little shoot we did almost 2 years ago by this superb lady. Although not too much, I still reach for my black skinny's and floral blouse. HA! Dang it.

We made a little trip to SF last week. Spend the day wondering around the city enjoying the gorgeous day and finished it off with Neon Indian and Sleigh Bells at the Independent. I didn't take any pictures there, especially regret not snapping one of Alexis Krauss (of sleigh bells) at the bar across the street before the show. Oh wells. It was a great show! One thing I will add, Neon Indian's performance made a much bigger fan of them out of me, which I wasn't expecting.

Two more things about that trip:
1] Typically I am not a fan of red, but THIS is my favorite thrifted red sweater of the moment. I have been wearing it a lot.
2] We had some good ass coffee from the blue bottle. They give you seltzer water to chase your espresso, that's just classy :) Also, they have been featured on the makers project so we had to try it and- it was JUST LOVELY .

We then occupied ourselves with celebrating Eva's 6th birthday. It was a WHOLE weekend of spoiling, that girl is loved by many.

If you ask her, she'll say her favorite part of the party was opening presents (whose isn't when its them that's getting presents!) She did get some amazing things (including this and this and this, which were among some of my favorites) Thanks to all our dears that were there to help us celebrate!

Eva: You're at work?! WHO is your boss?

Me: dishes... Mr. Dish is my boss' name.

Eva: haha! Mr. Dish?! That's funny!!! Is that your job to stand around and tell jokes all day?

At one point I was hired as a teller and when Tessa came over to my 'window' to sit on my lap Eva looked over and said, "ummm...I can't let you work like that."

marinated carrots

I have been craving this little carrot 'salad' for months. I believe its originally an Uzbekistanian dish, and since thats where my husband's family is from we usually only eat it at huge extended family events. I guess there is different ways of making it and originally it calls for vinegar and oil, but my mother-in-law (who is a bit of a health-nut in her own way) makes it solemnly with lemon juice. A bit frustrating getting any kind of recipe from her though, as its never a set measurement of ingredients... like "oh a little of that," and a "to your preference of this..." so usually it takes me a few tries to solve her riddles. This one, however was extremely easy! It tasted amazing and all completely raw. Too bad I didn't have that many carrots and could only make one generous serving. I saved some for Alex and he was mad that I only left him a little to taste.

1 lb of carrots, peeled and grated or chopped in (as long as possible) slices

4 garlic cloves, minced

juice of 1 1/2 lemons

1 teaspoon of sea salt

1 teaspoon of ground cumin

green onion and/or cilantro to taste

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl until carrots are completely coated in marinade.

Place in a jar or bowl with lid and allow to marinate in the refrigerator for a few hours.

I for one, like the little changes in the weather every couple of days. Last week we were eating watermelon and swimming, and this week I am back at pulling on my trench coat. Actually, I would prefer for the entire summer to be just like this! We love staying outside ALL day long, mild days call for picnics at the park and gloomy days call for an outing to grab a coffee.

We went to lovely little wedding this past weekend. The cutest couple and the chill wedding just suited them so perfectly. I never cared much for weddings until my close friends started getting married and weddings actually meant something (?), and now each wedding I attend I get a little teary eyed because weddings are beautiful and personal and I am always honored to be a witness of the happiness.

I mixed matched two pieces borrowed from the shop (wink).

p.s. We aren't big on 'hallmark' kind of holidays, I get a "ma" card from Eva every other day :) but I did make a little raw treat for us to share for yesterday. Its a very easy recipe (from a previously mentioned cookbook).

3/4 cup almonds (chopped in a food processor into small small pieces)

3/4 cup dates (seed removed and chopped into small pieces)*

1 tablespoon of honey

1 1/2 tablespoon of carob powder

pinch of salt

Mix all the ingredients together and then knead on a flat surface until it comes together. Form into quarter size balls. Let them refrigerate for a couple of hours.

*my hand mixer just gets stuck from getting jammed with the sticky dates, so I found chopping the dates by hand is a lot easier.

We went to Stinson beach last week!
This was the first trip over there this year and we have never been so early in the season. It was p-r-e-t-t-y cold so we didn't last long, but still a nice little day trip.
On our way back we stopped by Fairfax for some coffee and walked into a little vegan/raw restaurant. Fairfax is a small town, and very hippi-like (to me). Anyway, Eva was SUCH a poor sport about the place, she said she couldn't stand the smell and had her nose plugged the whole time (geez), and other than my raw brownie I wasn't too impressed either to be honest. Alex's blin was good but my combo plate of wraps was so so. My friend Liska posts about her raw/vegetarian food ventures and I guess I have become quite inspired subconsciously... I love looking at cookbooks and the last few times I was at the bookstore I found myself looking through more and more raw cookbooks which never really appealed that much to me before... After the restaurant I decided I will try making some of my own stuff, for I was certain I could do a better job (haha)! The other day I finally bought a Raw Cookbook I am obsessing over right now. It is very simple, and gives just enough ingredients to get my own creativity going. This week I have been eating (96%) raw and have really enjoyed it!

Figured since there is so much different produce at the farmers market now that its spring, this is the ideal time to give it a fair shot. A lettuce leaf wrap for lunch (yum) but its my breakfast that I have been raving about. An apple and banana smoothed together with a table spoon of ground flax seed and some cinnamon tastes pretty amazing (and a lot like cooked oat meal). The cookbook claims that the less energy your body needs to digest its food the more energy you have for other things, and so far I have to agree, feeling good...but will definitely be cheating at SacMoFo tomorrow.

we attended a 1920's themed mystery dinner party over the weekend.

i absolutely love all the options/inspirations out there for a 'green' christmas tree vs. a traditional live one. we long ago decided that in our tradition to celebrate joy and life at christmas, we wouldn't do it by killing any trees. i must be quick to confess that our potted christmas tree from last year (that we planned to re-plant once it got too big) did not survive the hot summer (eek) and thus we did kill ONE. golly.

we watched a john lennon documentary the other night and i am growing pretty obsessed with this legendary couple. they are so inspiring, from their story to their style. and i am a little surprised (although thinking about it i shouldn't be) there is quite a lot of movies made about him/them. i am looking forward to watching a few more and making my girls watch these to teach them some u.s. history (once they are a bit older of course).

my little evachka has an ear infection and strep throat so i've been playing doctor around the clock and really working 'mom' overtime this week. lots of naps, that i am required to take with her, watching cartoons snuggling together under hundreds of blankets on the couch, with quite a few less (much much less) 'glamorous' events in between. after some unsuccessful reasoning, threatening, bribing, and forcing we finally compromised with a 'special sick day smoothie' for her to take her antibiotics, so hopefully she will be recovering soon. in the meantime i thought i'd cheer things up by sharing one of our new favorite fall/winter traditions.

carrot cupcakes!

easy to make and easy to enjoy, here is the recipe.

yeilds 30 cupcakes

3 cups of spelt flour (or regular flour)

2 1/4 teaspoons baking soda

3/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon

6 large eggs

1 1/2 cups white sugar

1 1/2 cups canola oil

3 cups finely grated raw carrots (about 1 lb)

1 1/2 cups grated apple (approximately 3-4 apples)

3/4 cups chopped pecans

preheat oven to 350 degrees and line a muffin baking tray with paper cupcake liners.

whisk flour, baking soda, salt and ground cinnamon in a bowl.

in a separate bowl whisk eggs, sugar, and oil together. fold in the flour mixture until incorporated.

with a spatula fold in grated carrots, grated apples, and chopped nuts.

scoop 3 full table spoons into muffin cups. (should yield enough for 30)

bake for 20-25 min or until toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

cool completely.

frosting

1/2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature

8 ounce cream cheese, room temperatre

3 cups powdered sugar

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

beat all ingredients together with an electric mixer, or whisk by hand.

top cooled cupcakes with frosting and refrigerate those babies until serving. heavenly i tell you.

share them with some one you love.

pine cones and twigs

We took a little trip to apple hill over the weekend and helped (actually watched-actually sat in the car and waited) as some relatives chopped down their christmas trees. It was FREEZING. It rained/snowed! Which was really beautiful. Although that is not our tradition, we went along since I really wanted to get some pine cones, but with all the snow on the ground it was pretty much impossible. I did manage to carry a couple that my brother in-law knocked off the tree in my frozen little hands with hopes to recreate this beautiful wreath that the talented Emily Thompson makes.

It would look lovely in our stair hallway. We hung up our stockings today too. I am looking forward to putting little "christmas" decorations up here and there.

I have been reconnecting with my russian roots and drinking my weight in tea (it is icy cold outside!) Kind of craving a bowl of soul right now (chamomile tea brewed in steamed soy milk + mexican chocolate). We spent the day in the snow yesterday, freezing our a**es off and I think this is the first time I wished our little place in midtown came with a fireplace. I would love to be sitting by a fire right now.

Along with all the festivities this past week/weekend I have been scheming up this little move over to blogspot and making some additions/changes to the etsy shop. So needless to say, it has been a packed to the brim coupla days.

Here are some of the items that will be added this week ya'alls.

I am a little bit getting tired of my blonde hair, but it took so much work/patience/damage to get my locs here. Maybe its just this in between length that's got me in this rut. And I hate such vain dilemmas. Wish me not to act on impulse here please.

Thanks for being patient with me as I set up at the new site and continue to make little changes here and there. (Also, figuring out how to bring over my old content?) I already feel blogspot is much simpler, look I even have my etsy mini shop up on the site, take that wordpress. No hard feelings though. Thanks for coming along lovelies.

I recently wrapped up a little project with ThinkHouse Collective. ThinkHouse, first of all is an idea born of some beautiful people that have a heart for creativity, the local community, and empowering (pretty much every) individual they know. They are the first I heard about co-working from and what they currently have in the works I think is pretty great. Even if you aren't self employed/work from home this place is worth checking out just for how awesome the space is! Eva has said that she likes to go there after school to color but if not work from there I would at least like to live there one day thanks.

Got some sewing in and reupholstered a couple of chairs for them. It was a lot of fun and got me all antsy about changing it up at our own place. I am sitting in our rearranged living room now. I love rearranging furniture, redecorating on a budged (haha).
Watching bad tv. Adding a few more items to ol' etsy. Feeling a little like a sell out, or something don't know need some constructive criticism maybe... anywho, learning process. Shop till you drop.

Wasn't a huge pumpkin flavor fan of much of anything until a few years back and now it seems that with each fall I like it more and more! This year its been pumpkin soy lattes (recipe via deliciousnoise) and baking up batches of pumpkin chocolate chip cookies around the clock. I love this recipe because its very simple and I can make it gluten free by substituting spelt flour. Trader Joe's carries canned Organic Pumpkin for the season, so I make ours pretty much completely organic too! And it yields a lot of batter so-you too can have an extra bowl of it in the freezer at all times!

pumpkin spiced and iced cookies
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (or organic spelt flour)
1 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup soft butter or margarine (I use canola oil)
1 cup of organic sugar
1 3/4 cups (15 or 16 oz can) solid pack organic pumpkin
2 organic eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips

Combine the flour, pumpkin pie spice, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In another bowl beat butter and sugar until creamy. Mix in pumpkin, eggs, and vanilla. Add the flour mixture and mix to form batter. Fold in chocolate chips.

Drop rounded tablespoons onto parchment paper lined cookie sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes in a preheated 375 degree oven.

While the cookies are cooling mix up the glaze:
vanilla glaze
1 cup organic powdered sugar
1- 1 1/2 tablespoons of milk (I use soy)
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Add all ingredients and mix well. With a teaspoon drizzle over cooled cookies. My girls love helping with this part.

I look forward to visiting Apple Hill every fall and I love how this is becoming a family tradition for us (because we have very few).

Tessa took this pony ride very seriously, it was hard to tell if she was enjoying it or not, she had such a stern expression the entire time. Riding a pony when I myself was little was always such a fond memory for me that Tessa didn't really have much choice she was going to RIDE IT.

Eva on the other hand, a natural.

I like to say that we are doing all these things for the kids, but truthfully I enjoy them just as much as (I hope) they do. We absolutely had to go and feed some farm animals. I am still not quite sure why llamas are kept on farms, but I think they are very interesting animals, with their huge eyes and camel like faces.

Hence, I channelled llama's hair for the day.

Many of the farm owners we chatted with complained that the frost earlier in the season killed most of their crops. So there wasn't a huge variety to choose from but we got to pick some Granny Smiths. We have a good size bag, I think we'll make some caramel apples later in the week.

I like going to the smaller less popular farms and buy produce, you know THAT'S the way to buy produce; going to the actual farm and getting it from the hands that grew it, not from Target.

We ended the day with catching the last few rays of sun by the lake.

It was so peaceful. Just how we like it.

I fought the very non fall bright warm sunshine yesterday by wearing a hat and pulling on a fake cardigan. Its fake because its lace and provides no warmth at all. I miss layering so much and this thing is perfect for it even on the warmest of days.

And I have been craving pumpkin everything ever since the first drizzle of rain. So last night I made some pumpkin cookie batter! I didn't have all the ingredients to make the glaze that goes on top so the batter is in the freezer, but I did bake a sample batch and have already sampled one to many, I know I know! They are just so good, melt right in your mouth.

I have the best little family, have I mentioned that? Lately we have had a little quality time overload since we have all been sick and then sick some more, but you know as hard as it is in all of our crankiest moments, I really really really like being around them.

Tessa has been ridiculously amusing since she has started talking. Her vocabulary seems to multiply by the minute and between her and Eva they are a force to be reckoned with.

Here is the latest inside family joke:

Alex and I were surprised to find out that what we thought Tessa was saying "Chuck Norris" is actually "tag you're it!" Wow. Thanks Eva for decoding that one! Now when the girls want us to chase them around the house Eva says, "lets play Chuck Norris!" even though she has no idea what/who the heck that is.

Speaking of "what the heck" that's another phrase Tessa picked up, we thought it was funny when Eva says it, but it is HILARIOUS when Tessa says it! I tried to record it but instead caught them singing. This is a very rare occasion as they DO NOT like to be recorded singing for God knows I've tried, and here what do you know, Tessa and Eva busting Castledoor's Shouting At Mountains. Notice how Tessa leads Eva into the "dream, dream, dream." Haha!

2 weeks ago we went and saw Arcade Fire at the Greek in Berkeley. Amazing! I would totally pay to see the same exact show again in a heart beat.

I really do need to get into the habit of taking along our camera (as lame as it is) and taking more pictures, I never remember to at the moment I should, ya know?

So, I like looking at this picture and tell myself my roots aren't THAT bad. Haha. I did buy a similar hat the other day (with the same intentions). Not to worry guys, the problem should be fixed next week. And then I am promised a fake perm! Actually I have been searching for tiny foam curlers to try and just do it myself for a look similar to this:

Any idea where I could find some? I tried Target and Ulta with no luck. I did come across some at a thrift store but something in me just couldn't let myself buy used foam curlers from a thrift store, and besides there wasn't even enough for me to do the whole head...(that I think was probably the real reason I didn't buy them).

It's going onto week two for us of taking care of little sicklings, Tassa just started her turn with the cold a couple of days ago, so I forsee at least a few more days of being anchored at home. So sad to see the little ones sick! Although Tessa's raspy voice is also really really cute!

Its just the worse to spend a weekend like this when the weather is nice for picnics outside or trips to apple hill. Hoping to knock out some projects over the weekend, I'd typically wouldn't have a chance to get around to...

Don't you just hate it when you buy something pricey thinking you can't live without it only to bring it home and find that you don't love it as much as you did in the store fitting room? (Its that great lighting and mirrors!) And worse if you bring it home and wear it but then after a while you realize that initial obsession and belief that you will keep it forever and EVER is totally gone, and the price you paid will never be redeemed from the garment after all. Oh and then the guilt! Haha. Happens (I mean happened) to me too often ... and that's what I am currently telling myself about this cloak...

But you know whats even better? Buying something ridiculously cheap and loving the garment even more when you bring it home. You just can't beat it. I have a few items just as such said to break out this weekend as we travel to a few colder weather destinations. Looking forward to layering and actually needing to wear close toe shoes.

You know what else? I would love to own a little bakery like Maggie Gyllenhaal's character has in Stranger Than Fiction. I love that film. I watched it a couple of nights ago and snacked on some cold left over home made pizza from dinner earlier. A lovely lovely night.

When that movie just came out, I was crazy about Hanes tank tops and wore them religiously and my favorite scene was when Ana Pascal serves Harold Crick a cookie with milk wearing a wife beater tank, skinny jeans, boots, and a cropped sequence jacket. Hot damn.

Figs were at the farmers market this week! I have been waiting and waiting for them and was worried I might miss them since I hear they have a very short season. They were perfectly ripe but it took me a coupla days to figure out what to finally do with them. You guys know me and scones, so naturally I settled on trying to make some with figs and feta. I am sure its been done by someone somewhere, but in my case, I'd like to think I made it up, thank you.

The recipe is so simple, I just might convert to using this as my base for other scones... Here ya go if you want to give it a try (I modified this original recipe):

2 cups of spelt flour (you could also use all-purpose flour)
1 TBSP baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3 tsp sugar
1/3 cup of butter, chilled and cut into large pieces
1/2 soy milk (you could use regular milk)
1/2 feta
3/4 cups of diced figs

Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Mix together flour, baking powder, salt and sugar.

Work the butter in with a fork or your hands until it resembles dry bread crumbs.

Add soy and feta and mix just until in comes together.

Add figs, mix and knead with your hands a few times to evenly distribute the fruit.

Form into a ball and flatten on a cutting board then slice into 8 wedges.

Place on your prepared cookie sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes.

They taste delightfully different and I totally loved the unexpected combination.

I would love to find a poncho for winter this year. While keeping an eye out for that the last time I was out thrifting it up, I came away with this oversized sweater. For now it can function like a cloak, to hold me out from making any irrational purchases right? It was the perfect thing to throw on while I sat out and read this afternoon. I recently finished Atonement and now picked up the latest from Ian McEwan, Saturday.

I was told by a certain 5 year old that since the book is called Saturday, I am only allowed to read it on Saturday, but with her off at school and the other one napping I CAN DO WHAT EVER I WANT.

We* took the teepee over to the biggest green patch we have here in midtown and spend the morning putting grass stains on all the clothes that are to be added to the shop (wink).

My wish finally came true and last weekend we went to Stinson beach. I know, see? Its not hard to keep this girl happy. It's just close enough to avoid some serious melt downs from squeezing as much as you can from a day trip with kids. JUST CLOSE ENOUGH. We came pretty close to ending it all (at the very end of it). But we made it, kite flying and sand digging conquered.

Eva could totally pull of Rhianna hair.

We came back home only to find a paralyzing heat wave. I don't like heat. There are a few things in life that make me whisper bad words under my breath and heat is definitely one of them. BUT, it has been significantly cooling down ever since. So I will spare you any more complaining. I got so excited about the breeze and that we will be in the 70s this weekend that I even broke out my socks. We are making use of the balcony again. Which reminds me I am yet to find a table to go out there for our cocktail evenings.

Having the windows open and the wind blowing throughout the whole house is so rejuvenating. I just might be very trophy wifey today.

I use to somewhat pride myself on being a good multitasker. Lately though, I am realizing more and more that in my attempts to multitask I instead get distracted and end up doing something completely different not really accomplishing what I meant to in the beginning. You know, like I start at the laundry machine because I want to load the dryer before I start washing the dishes and then while I am hanging some items to air dry in our sunroom, I decide I really need to organize things in there and rearrange the furniture too. Anywho. During that very furniture rearranging yesterday Eva and I stumbled upon little crafts from her birthday party. So as I tried to finish up she waited impatiently to paint.

Her birthday party theme this year was a spin off of "Fantastic Mr. Fox." We made fox masks with shiny pipe cleaners for whiskers and painted little foxes that I cut out of egg cartons.

So forget the dishes altogether, yesterday we painted instead.

I have a feeling now that Eva will be starting school and making friends with kids that aren't so pop culture sheltered I won't get away so easily with just sticking to woodland creatures birthday themes. Hopefully though I've laid down a strong enough foundation to avoid anything Barbie or Hannah Montana related. We'll see....

I am not a huge champagne fan---until quite recently. On our last visit to the bay we were sitting outside a cafe with our coffee when the cutest couple came out with a bottle of champagne for their breakfast. Now that's how I would drink champagne, I thought! (How easily am I influenced?!)

We made mimosas yesterday to finish off a bottle from the night before for our Sunday brunch.

I feel like such a grown up.

ok how often, really, does this happen?

I mentioned these clogs on here a few weeks ago, and yesterday when I walk into a trading store I run into these babies?

In my size, hardly worn, super comfy, 12bucks. End of story.

This is also my most favorite outfit right now. A super lightweight tank top from UO that I got probably 3 years ago and trousers gifted to me by a very lovely friend.

Remember that weird metal guy statue outside a gift shop on L and 21st? Well that store is long gone and in its place is Freestyle Trading Company. They just opened up!

They also sell and buy vintage clothing, which Crossraods doesn't do.

Anyway. Its a pretty sweet location. I wish I would have bought that place and opened up my gluten free bakery/coffee shop. It would of been perfect because its a place I could have the line going out the door and around the corner.

ouh-wee! So this week's experiment in running solemnly on french press without any espresso FAILED big time! Obviously. A bit impossible for me to keep up with the hard times (ha) without my jolts strategically implemented throughout the day. What was I thinking?! I am especially looking forward to my Sunday morning coffee run followed by farmers market, followed by another coffee run followed by play date with some dear friends. You better bet your dollar on me being the first one waiting Monday morning at Naked Lounge Coffee's Roasting house to get my pound of freshly roasted espresso beans (for half off). Or maybe two (wink wink).

I am also especially looking forward to getting my hairs trimmed tomorrow! This week I have gone through a few sessions of bleach bathing and toning, happy to announce that currently I am a pretty light blonde with just a hint of blue hue. Heck. Did not foresee that 'blonde' is so high maintenance! Lizka will be (barely) trimming it for me. My bangs wont be impairing my vision any longer.

So. Last thing I am looking forward to, but now as I am typing this I am realizing that it might be a stretch to fit in tomorrow with my already packed day, never the less I will try (I will be back on espresso mind you) is baking some cherry crumble cake. I came upon this recipe and have been dreaming of it ever since.

If I go into a vintage boutique 10bucks for an item on sale seems SO cheap. But then I go into a thrift store and I am contemplating over a pair of shorts for 99cents for a half hour. Seriously? The mind game. I bought two pairs of such said shorts and have been wearing them non stop, actually. They are loose fitting and have the wide elastic band, so so comfy. Both have side pockets, "that's a deal breaker ladies".

There you have it, my $2.50 complete ensemble.

I am a bit taken back by the lovely weather we have been having. I was preparing myself for a much hotter summer, which has turned out so so mild. These two have been loving it too, because it means park time anytime.

We workshop-ed it up last Thursday. Ended up with such a creative bunch. It was lovely to meet some new faces, and bring out the little (hopefully) green thumb in all of us.

Earlier this month we drove down with some friends to the bay and checked out the Indie Mart. A bunch of great local designers and handmade goodies. Nothing in Sacramento comes close to this kind of selection!

The vintage collections of Little Curiosities was probably one of my favorites "things" stands. There were also a lot of clothes designers even a guy that made flip flops out of recycled tires. And those looked a lot better than you just imagined them. Pretty professional actually.

I also was pretty impressed with this girl. She melts down bullet casing and makes charms. AMAZING. She also sells vintage ones. I regret a little bit not getting the bird scull one, but there were just so many good ones, it was too hard to choose.

There will be another indie mart next month. A good reason to make a trip!

I love visiting San Fransisco and I am bummed that we don't go over as often as we use to. Its not the same when you have short people (that you love) in carseats in the back. I wish I would have snapped some pictures of the street style this last time. I am very inspired by old Asian ladies. THEY know what they are doing! I think I would pretty much wear anything in their closets. Seriously next time you see an old tiny Asian lady you can think of me wearing just that.

I am still not totally sure what possessed me to go blonde. It was one of those totally impulsive things. I have that when it comes to hair every once in a while, like the last time I cut it boy-short, even though I was more than half way to the length I want my hair to be! Anyway. After so much damage I will have to at least keep it for a while, but of course now I am coming across all this lovely darker shaded hair that I am coveting. My latest?

THIS is totally unlike me. But Liz put some teal in her hair not too long ago and I think that warmed me up to the idea. I love this super natural carmel brown look with the teal! So, so pretty.

Terrariums are just around the corner!

This workshop will teach you how to make succulent miniature landscapes. We'll provide the glass container, plants, dirt and care instructions for your tiny enclosed garden. You can bring a little plastic woodland creature or some kind of tiny trinket that will keep your plants company!

Come hang with some overdressed naturalists over some wine and appetizers (whipped up by deliciousnoise) that aren't afraid to get their hands dirty.

crumbled feta

I guess I have a bit of an addictive nature about me. I think it reveals itself most in our (and by that I mean mine, since I do most of the grocery hunting and cooking) edible items. My latest fridge must have is feta. I am a little embarrassed to say the little warehouse of a place where I have been getting this stuff in bulk, and so there is plenty to go around throwing it on top of just about everything.

My breakfast this morning:

Toast, blueberry spread, crumbled feta.

My lunch:

Lettuce, zucchini, shredded carrots, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, crumbled feta and homemade garlic dressing.

When I don't have as much time to chop for lunch I have thrown together avocado, cilantro and feta, or just black beans, cilantro and feta. TRY IT!

This heavenly goodness is here to stay I think.

It was muh birthday this past weekend. We started off celebrating the day before with the kiddos over some home made ice cream from Ginger Elizabeth.

The salty chocolate ice-cream dipped in dark chocolate is darn GOOD!

The day of, the husband and I road our bikes around town, did I mention my bike is all fixed up? It is! Still need some mustache handle bars and to attach my little basket, but its running. Went and saw Sister Crayon and the "Sister Crayon Dancers" (inside joke). Went out for sushi and drinks and tried cafeteria for dessert. OK. I would love to have the furniture of that place in my house. From the crate full of light bulbs to the eames style bar chairs. Pretty amazing. And don't let the "dinner" style menu scare you. Its a cute place and the food is good.

We skipped town very last minute and went camping for the long weekend. I am glad we got that out of our systems and although it was a grand ol' time I was reminded of the reasons why I am not much of a camper.

Today we are recuperating.

I worked up a few shelf "liners" this week. Still on the fence about how I feel about 'em. Besides the really strong musky old book pages smell that now fills that corner of the room, it does add a bit of an illusion and texture. Anywho.

What I am really excited about is the chalk board going up in the little ladies room. The husband is putting on a few more coats (he is a perfectionist) and them mounting them to the sides of the shelving on hinges so that the boards can swing open like a cabnet door. Our inspiration was this and I can't wait until ours are in and the girls can chalk it up.

Ok. What do you think of this hair? I think its pretty amazing. Not that any kind of a mother of two should have a cut as such, but still she wears it well. Pretty sweet little shop too that she is modeling for.

Bitter sweet as one of my very favorite rompers sold today. I kind of want to start requesting the people that purchase these to send me pictures of their kids in them. I would squeal. Seriously, pictures welcome!

Agh. You don't need me to tell you, weekends are quite nice.

And we had a lovely dad's day weekend folks. We started off with Micmacs, if you haven't watched this movie yet and are a fan of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's films like Amelie, I am pretty sure you'll like this too...

Some local bands played at the Town House. Loved SEA OF BEES, but of course, Doom Bird and John Vanderslice was pretty goot too. A fun show.

Alex got taken out to an Ethiopian restaurant he's been asking for a long time for on Father's day. It was quite tasty. The little ones were good sports about trying the new cuisine. They loved the appetizer wraps with split peas. YUM. We recommend this place.

And of course we consumed lots of cuba libres.

The to do list for this week is: shadow portraits, black board for the munchkins room, and 'wall paper' for my living room shelves. I hope to share as those come to their finished state. Hold me accountable oh you internet.

I opted out for a movie instead of adding items to the shop last night. BUT, look at these two that (so selflessly) agreed to stuff their faces with jelly beans while we shot pictures of them today...

I love the fit, comfort and ease of these darling cords. And like most of the pieces, alls you need is some sandals and a tank and you got yourself a lovely summer wardrobe staple for the kiddos. They will be up on etsy tonight, along with some others!

I kind of wish Eva had to wear glasses ALL the time. She pulls them off so well!

I hope to have a little styled shoot with my girls of some of the pieces for inspiration later this week. I love how a lot of these pieces are unisex and really versatile. And I must say you wont find quality like this anywhere. I am amazed at how well things 'use' to be made.

In other news, I am now blond. Well, more like on the way. Since I have been coloring my hair for so long, blah blah blah, its a process you know?!

I still forget about it and then freak out when I catch a random reflection somewhere.

This little booger is going on night number 2 of sleep over heaven at cousins house. The house was so quite today with her away.

It caused me to ask Alex if we could get a dog when we get old and the girls are moved out to have someone to take care of. He said no. I asked, because you don't want a dog, or because you don't want the girls to ever move out? He said both.

Good thing we still have what... at least 20 years to figure the logistics out.

On the other hand Tessa has gotten away with making a mess of quite a lot of things because I just feel like she is lonely without her older sister and she has to come up with things like taking down all the board games and emptying ALL the boxes of their contents for entertainment. Oh Tess, no no no.

Visited Naked for coffee twice today. Went to the antique fair, which turned out to be a bit disappointing. Husband made lovely lunch.Veggie wraps with boiled egg. (Nice touch.) And took a swim. I really dont do well in the heat, so the pool in the back will be a frequent spot this week as it is promised to be toasty. Lazy lazy.

Ha. I wish. Here is really me with my good ol' faithful Chloe.

She has indeed been good to me but she is getting a bit too worn.

Not that this is something I pride myself on or anything, but I am quite picky when it comes to purses. They are such a commitment you know? The last time I tried to two time Chloe I ended up leaving a cart full of groceries at the checkout at Traders Joe because (oh crap!) forgot my wallet in the other purse.

I came across these little bags a few days ago and keep thinking that I might just have found a good replacement. So versatile and probably doesn't weight 70 pounds, like my current bag does!

jars of regret

I've been saving our jars from everything. My husband kept asking me what I intend on doing with them and I kept telling him that I wasn't sure yet, but something AMAZING. The box under the sink where they were carefully treasured was getting a little full and so I decided to finally soak them peel off the labels and use 'em for something. It all turned out to be quite the process, our sink being small and the number of jars being big. To occupy the girls I gave them the lids to play with which were a hit for like 10 minutes, and then deserted all over the house. So as I found them in all sorts of places for the next couple of days I trashed them. OH how I wish I didn't now!

Number 1: This little project! How easy and lovely. I could have made a whole garland out of the jars and some christmas lights had I still had the lids!

Number 2: I could have at least stacked the jars while they are in the freezer. Some are currently being used to store some sangria-ready-brandy-soaked-fruit left overs from my muchkin's fifth birthday party.

Just add the club soda and you're good to go. So what that it's 1:00 in the afternoon and instead of my coffee pick me up I had me some sangria?

Yesterday Liza and I hit up some garage sales and came home with some pretty nice finds. I have for forever now been searching for a lamp shade and I finally found one! It was a great completion to my weekend project.

I started with this.

Here is who typically accompanies me on projects but never seems to stay too long. Ha.

Some supplies.

I got this idea to reupholster the lamp. With some old pages from a book. And so with a little wall paper glue and a paint brush I kinda did.

Here is the final product with the lamp shade I just scored on top! I am pretty pleased at how it turned out, especially because I have secretly started hating that lamp and have been contemplating getting rid of it as all hope for ever finding a lamp shade died.

I have a feeling there will be more of such reupholstering to come. Try it. Super easy.

Our trip to the city earlier this week was pretty much perfect. We ate amazing food and drank lots of amazing coffee. Browsed many shops... have you been to "Behind the Post Office"? Such a cute boutique! I cant seem to find them online, and what a shame. Walked around in the rain and searched for shells at the beach. For my daughters ok?

Russian bakery is always a stop for us. Chibareki and trubachki are well worth the typical russian bad service.

We have also come to love Tartine Bakery in the mission district. All organic and mostly local, this little place is our favorite for morning coffee and treat. The hotel we stayed at lets you borrow bikes! And we were so looking forward to riding to the cafe, but unforch it was raining that morning. Still getting up so early was rewarded with first choice, and man is their stuff so good! You should definitely visit next time you are in the area.

I am trying to figure out this whole blogging thing, right? hence the little changes here and there every so often. I will keep doing that, just so you know, until I am a little more proud of it.

So. A few big announcements! As you will see to the right, my first attempt at an etsy shop. Its in the very beginning stages, as I am quickly learning that it takes a little more effort and time than I originally thought. Anywho, there are a few items listed, but there is many more coming, and once those babies are up I will be making a little bigger deal about it. Last Sunday we planted our first garden! I wanted to go out today and snap some pictures of it to share, but its all rainy outside. Delicious noise shared some photos from our planting day, so you know. Pretty proud of us!

Nows all I need is this cook book.

I took a glance at it the other day and I just NEED to have it. I am pretty unhappy with my pathetic current cookbook collection, this one would definitely get some use, unlike the other ones. The recipes looked so simple and easy and all things I like.

Another announcement. Husband got me a bike! It needs lots of work but he is putting in the time and custom building it for me. He's the greatest really. Can't wait until its ready!

I've been coming upon all things fox, since the short person's fifth birthday is shaping out to be fox themed. Having such a pretty print hanging around wouldn't hurt...

He's really pretty much the best husband ever. Happy anni to us! We are celebrating with a little trip to the bay area. Super excited. The short people will hang out with grandma. So overdue, let me tell ya.

We're staying at the Good Hotel. (the first for us, so we'll see...) But its pretty close to just about everything and looks fun.
I cant wait to get my latte and scone from Tartine's! Also on the list: Russian bakery and our favorite thai place. Bundling up and sitting at the beach and walking around the streets aimlessly.

hello hello
we're fresh off the boat from graeagle. a beautiful tiny little town of a place in plumas county.

It was so reminiscent of my childhood summers. There isn't much to do but soak in the outdoorsy-ness or read. We took walks and saw some forest critters. Jump roped and hopscotched. Got in trouble for trespassing (but of course because we are russians). I also picked up Omnivore's Dilemma to re-start reading.Goodness. Pretty enlightening.

It was (almost) a week worth spent. Ok, a little less than a week, but it sure felt like it. A bit colder this year than our last visit, but we kept cozy inside with our french press coffee and cabin blankets.

Not gonna lie, we are city dwellers at heart. And it is pretty nice to be back home. Missed our little midtown treehouse and all the noise. Yes, even you two drunk guys singing Blink-182 "Please Tell Me Why" right now... white noise to me.

This month seems like is just flying by. And it feels like summer time already, tomorrow we're planning on going for the first swim of the season. What?! (I know, I know for some of you that's already been done). And next week its VA-CA for the husband. SO we have a few little getaways planned here and there.

This all means plans better be well on the way for my oldest daughter's FIFTH birthday which is coming up fast at the beginning of next month. Tear. They grow so fast.

For someone who doesn't really enjoy celebrating my own birthdays, I do enjoy hosting them for my girls (and husband).

But anyway, we are looking forward to celebrating little Eva turning five. Last year we had an Indian theme for her and I sewed a 4 1/2 foot teepee to have up in the back yard. It was fun, and we still set it up inside to play in. Wont be sewing much for this year's festivities but hope it will be just as memorable for her.

And he says that a lot of their cuisine includes such spice blends with catchy names. Anywho, he's been throwing it on everything and tonight I added it to my garlic tomato and carrot stir fry that we pile on top of tilapia and rice. (I also cover the whole thing with cilantro). It was pretty darn good! My girls pretty much inhale it whenever I make tilapia, its becoming quite the staple here.

For dessert I had my latest obsession: brown rice cake spread with almond butter and sprinkled with chocolate chips. OH MY GOSH! Its like a candy bar, but way better. Rice cakes: Trader Joe's brand. These are seriously the best brown rice cakes. I am loving the almond butter with roasted flax seed also by Trader Joe's. Its probably the tastiest 'cheap' almond butter around, in my opinion anyway. I know there is good quality ones out there but they are so darn pricey and we go through a whole latta almond butter, so ya. Give this snack a try. Its so yummy.

Speaking of almond butter, I am going to try to recreate these PB&J sushi rolls Serious Eats had recently featured.

Doesn't that look so fun? I think my girls would love it. Tessa hasn't been introduced to sushi yet. I know- sad. We will need to break her in soon. I was actually wanting to make some homemade sushi. I've been hanging on to this kid friendly ice-cube tray sushi recipe for so long... its ridiculous.

Did a little shoot earlier today of the kids in some pieces from the whitecrow children vintage collection. Yup. They did so great. Here is a little sneak peak of a few of my favorites. Love these four. So much!

Another blissful and successful thrifting trip earlier this week people. And so I'm sharing some of my treasured finds. One that is not in these pictures is our new coffee table. Its a vintage danish design, and just the kind I have been searching for for soooo long. Husband is fixing it up a bit and so its completely disassembled at this point. Its nice to have him back.

This weekend I will be working hard on all the measurements and picture editing of the little children's clothing collection. Plan to have those up on etsy oh so so soon. Also, I hope to have a few home decor items and even a few things for him&her. We'll see wont we...

I spray painted quite a lot of things over this week too so our place kind of has that paint smell right now. But I feeling quite accomplished and ready for the weekend!

I am currently really enjoying geometric shapes, tribal prints and color blocking (gasp)! I love how a few of these kind of pieces are accenting our vintage collection at home.

I would love to find a geometric covered bed duvet for my room, and then maybe I could come down a bit.

Lisa Congdon is a mixed media artist and illustrator from San Francisco. I would love to visit one of her exhibitions, but unforch she isnt showing in SF anytime soon.

Yesterday we spend the day hanging with friends at fairytale town. Had a lovely time. These two are not a new fixation, but here are my little monsters busy at play.

haha. No sorry guys, this is not one of those posts about me putting cute things in my purse and then taking pictures of them. The sun peeked out and I got so antsy to leave the house, so I hit up some thrift stores a few days back.

Its pretty darn rare that I get to go and spend some extensive time browsing, because the short people I usually have accompanying me just dont get the point of that. But I made the mistake of going too late and scrambling around just before closing time. Nevertheless, I managed to snatch up some goodies:

Along with some stuff for the house. Anyway. I haven't gone thrifting in awhile, and it was just so good to come across so many lovely things (for dirt cheap!).

Coupla things:

Made a little getaway to Berkeley over the weekend. Picked up a few little things for projects from stores that are only found there, and (of course) got inspired to add a few more projects to the list. I absolutely cant resist anthropology. Although the clothes isn't totally my thing, they do manage to pull off ah-mazing displays. They should put a book together. Seriously.

Picked up some cardigans for muh girls. I melt at the kids stuff AA has. Dude, how cute are these leggings?

Regret not grabbing those...

I feel like we brought the bay weather back with us, its been raining and super cold. So we are building forts and the place smells like a coffee shop, keeping cozy inside.

I'm heading over a few tabs to order my curtains and rug right now! I love love love getting things in the mail.

The weather has been so perfect this week that we have pretty much stayed outside the entire time.

Makes me dream of beach.

We usually make it out to Stinson Beach a few times with the kiddos and I can't wait to take them soon.

Today is cleaning day.
And lots of coffee day.
And baking some cookies and scones for the weekend day.
And husband home for lunch day.
And that hair of mine growing day. (thats right) So hard. Because I have been seeing/wanting all these cute short cuts. Not a good sign.

Hope you make time for a picnic at the park this weekend.

small achivements

Few things I was all about this week:

1] Completing some things off the do to list:
Put up the frames. Hopefully they stay up. I only say that because I used this adhesive sticky tape stuff on some of the frames and reeeeaaaallly tried to stretch the small amount of it I had to work with. Please stay.

Here is our first attempt at a terrarium, its still alive, thank you very much.

And Eva planted our (at home) herbs, and is checking them everyday to make sure they have enough water.
Its fun to grow things.

2] On the whole herb note; this week I have been all about cilantro. Throwing an unreasonable amount of it on everything. Its just so good.

3]John Lennon. Because his lyrics are just a bit more kid friendly than ol' Bob Dylan.

4] Getting oh so close to breaking out the sewing machine and sewing some pillow cases. The sunroom/work space is almost cleared out of the remainder boxes. Mostly thanks to husband for that one.

5] Searching the internet for that birch tree wallpaper. No wheres to be found. I think I will have to settle for lining the shelving with either news paper or making my own wall paper out of pages from an old book. It will be a little more time consuming, but then again, it will be repurposing and I like that.

6]Easter candy. ALL ABOUT IT.

We dont really have any Easter traditions yet for the kiddos. Because we suck and I am not super keen on the consumer driven Easter holiday cheer that is the standard, you know?

We will be definitely having a special 'spring' breakfast. And chocolate egg candy will some how be involved. There will also be a trip to the farmers market for some eggs and red onion, and egg dying the ol' russian way, before we head over to spend the rest of the day with extended fam.

I loved the post Serious Eats did about which part of the chocolate Easter bunny do you eat first. Which later sparked some controversy as some people (I guess...) have a phobia about eating any kind of food that looks like an animal.

No problem here, if its chocolate.
And ears first, of course.

The one sweet thing that comes out around this time of year that I could really do without is PEEPS. And how far some people go with them...

Yes, people. I adore Todd Selby and his work at theselby.com. So much authenticity and inspiration. I love peeking into peoples lives through visiting their spaces like this. Such diversity and beauty.

Here are a few from one of my favorite selby shoots.

I have to say, I am still quite obsessed with the color of their living room. And since we can paint here at the new place... I just might.

Pretty excited that the husband is on board with the ruffly curtains for our living room. And the other highly anticipated internet purchase will be...

the wall paper will go into our many built in shelving to create a floating shelf effect... or at least thats my hope. I'll share how that turns out.

Promise to do a little tour as soon as it comes together for us here. In the mean time, we did manage to pull of a pretty darn good selby inspired shoot of our own at our old home.

I have really gone a little crazy for sweatshirts. Thats pretty much all I am searching for at thrift stores these days. And I feel like I can't get enough. I have a few favorites, a few that are in need to be a little worked on for them to become favorites (but I am wearing them anyway) and some borrowed that that I have to say I am enjoying a little too much.

I love dressing up a plain sweatshirt.

Oh Markus Lupfer you do some amazing things with a sweatshirt.

There is sequence polar bear one in the shop that I really wouldn't mind owing...

And what? You have bearded man sweatshirt just for me?

I would even settle for the less hairier version...

So yeah, I am a little (but only very little) fighting this warm weather. oh well.

naked (not for the weak hearted)

naked coffee is my favorite these days, and how convenient that they are now just a block away? a little too convenient.

Since we have been working hard setting up shop, we have also been making lots of these naked inspired drinks to keep up with these hard times.

Karoac: 4 shots of espresso, 2-3 table spoons of condensed milk, handful of ice.

Make 4 shots of espresso and pour into a jar, or something that you can put a spill free lid on.

Drop 2-3 table spoons of condensed milk into the jar.

Add a handful of ice and place the lid on. Give it a good shake, until you can see that the contents are well mixed.

I like to leave it in the jar to have it on the go, or pour into a glass. Whenever my husband makes these for me, he throws in coffee beans on top, it looks pretty.

(Only recommended for serious coffee drinkers.)

Not that we went too far, a whooping 7 blocks. But still. Its been a crazy busy weekend. We are all loving the new place.

The husband is doing a late night run to Target for some shower curtain rings because after all he has to go to work and we can't go on without a functioning shower any longer. So, of course, I get on here to check out what kind of shower curtains Target is selling these days, while he is there maybe he will pick 'em up?

Today he and I have been taking turns going to the old place and cleaning, and thus taking turns at some good ol' quality time with the munchkins. I think they had a little more fun with me this afternoon/evening, but thats just me.

We have a little balcony adjacent to the kitchen which you could only get to through a window and so we kicked out the screen and threw down a blanket and had a lovely dinner/picnic out there while watching the cars go by down below. It felt like we were in a treehouse.

Go here and listen to their treehouse song, it was one of my favs some time ago...

I am searching for a good chandelier. I'd really like to have one (or just something) over the table at the new place. I would actually like to make one muh-self... but haven't come up with any good ideas yet. Maybe something out of teapots? Maybe just a tea kettle? Maybe something made out of paper? We shall see.

Liska posted these dishes a little while ago, and I just cant stop thinking about them. Ceramic paper plates. Pretty please?

Have you had your cup of tea today?

The evenings are still pretty chilly around here and it seems as if I have been drinking my weight in tea to keep warm. I LOVE the fuji green tea from Tea Cozy. And I am all out right now. Sad.

A little weekend update:
Circled Clotheirs made their debute at 2nd Saturday. Love their Lookbook. So excited for them!

I spent way too much time at the antique fair, browsing. Warmer weather brings out so many more dealers and so many more people. Next time I think I will just walk over there, because parking was ridiculous.

This week will be a pretty busy one, I am getting to feel a bit stressed. Just so much to do. There are things to catch up on, and organize, and pack. But I am getting the spring cleaning out of the way at the same time, good right? I am pretty excited about a certain little something though, that I will announce about later on this week!

(our) march madness

Its been a lot of late nights and early mornings this week, with a whole lot of happenings in between. Mostly fun things so by no means am I complaining. Only today do I feel like I've had a decently productive day, even a few packed up boxes in preparation for our big move to prove it.

Celebrated my dad's and mom's birthdays, which are only 4 days apart. Love them.

Here is them bringing me home from the hospital.

We've taken many walks around Midtown. I got a few new articles of clothing from Crimson&Clover. Including a dress that I will need to alter (ah another one). When we move it'll be pretty much across the street from us. Ha. Eva got hooked up by Olivia from Bows&Arrows with some pretty cute sun glasses, which were ordered in children size by mistake. She swears its sunny and wears them ALL THE TIME. Looks darn cute.

planning some planting

I know you couldn't tell from simply visiting my house (because the lack of) but I LOVE potted plants.

Currently I have two inside plants that have gotten pretty big and we've had for quite awhile and one little cactus looking thing. Two outside; one that use to have some flowering seasonals, but those have died off and only the evergreens are hanging in, and our potted Christmas tree that we will be replanting into a bigger pot and keeping for hopefully another 2 years or until it gets too heavy for us to drag inside and decorate for Christmas. Then it will go into to the ground permanently, probably at grandma's.

Tangent (kind of): we got the Christmas tree last November from a nursery that kept the plant outside and once we brought it inside I think we definitely confused some of the hibernating critters with the sudden warmth. For about a week after we had it I would have to make a thorough search each morning for rollypollies. The wooden floors made it pretty hard for them to hide but great for them to roll and so they were quite a hit with Tessa (my 1yr old). Golly.

All this to say, I do love plants but have yet to develop a green thumb. Especially for the flowering seasonals, but I am not even going to go there this time. This spring there is high hopes to start a garden with just some herbs and tomatoes. And I would really like to expand my inside potted plant collection. I gasped when I saw this:

AAAAANNNNDDDD the vintage silverware garden markers at their shop! I really really want these for our (soon to come) herb garden.

So.

I can't wait to get all the supplies and plant a terrarium with my Eva (4 yr old). I found this great tutorial of how to catered specifically for such a project with the kiddos. But you can use it too, because look, its beautiful.

Hate to say it, but we've been sick for FOREVER now. Started to feel better this week and so I am planning to use this extra energy for big things this weekend:

1] Doilies. I got some at the thrift store that I'd like to mess around with today and try out some ideas. I'll share later on what I came up with. (I know you cant tell, but I am pretty excited about that).
And that vintage fabric thats in the background will most likely become a little pillow to go on top of an unfinished wood ottoman thing that my boy dumstered (hehe). I plan to re-upholster it with this great plaid wool fabric my friend shared with me that I think will go pretty well with this floral piece.

2] I will be busy all day growing my hair, so that it could look like this soon.

3] More coffee and reading some Tolstoy. Hopefully on our porch. The weather is nice enough today.

And finally dreaming of owning this little collection. Eternal child. You are pretty great.
